The Monkey Head Nebula, a Supernova and Some Stunning Planets going into the New Year!

Photo by Sergey Yagoda

Sergey gave me this info for his “Monkey Head Nebula”, NGC2174 in Orion. It is an H II emission nebula associated with the open star cluster NGC 2175.

Date of observation: 30 nov 2021
Stack of only 16 10-min frames (total exposure 2.6 hours).

Gear:

  • Celestron 9.25″ with f/6.3 FR on CGEM II mount
  • Camera: ASI2600MC Pro with ASI174MM Mini guide cam & Celestron OAG;
  • Controls with ASIAIR Pro

Image processing in Pixinsight. Per logs it seems that I used graxpert package for gradient removal and Spectrophotometry–based Color Calibration (SPCC).

This is a relatively small barred spiral galaxy called NGC2523, and located in the constellation Camelopardalis.  I took this image because of its interesting shape and the fact that there was a recent supernova 2024aeee!

The exposure is an 8.5h exposure using my 12 inch Meade LX200 on my Paramount MyT, imaging with my usual ASI2600mc cooled camera. This is 170 unguided 3 min exposures taken the night of Dec. 26, 2024. I stacked the images using DeepSkyStacker and processed using Pixinsight.

David Murray took these outstanding shots of Jupiter and Mars! He acquired with FireCapture (20K frames), processed with PIPP, AutoStakkert, Registax6 and Photoshop. Best 5%. Seeing he said was better than average. He used a 2.5X Powermate giving his 8″ f/6 Newt an effective focal length of about 3000mm.
